Melamine Serving Platters for Deli Counters: The Rock Collection Colour & Finish Guide
Share
Melamine has a reputation problem it doesn't entirely deserve. Most people know it from cheap picnicware, but the commercial-grade melamine used in retail deli platters is a genuinely different material — chosen deliberately over ceramic or glass for reasons that matter specifically on a busy counter. This guide covers what melamine actually is, and how to choose a finish from the Rock collection.

What melamine actually is
Melamine tableware is made from melamine resin — a hard thermoset plastic formed by reacting melamine with formaldehyde and curing it under heat, a process called crosslinking that leaves the finished material rigid, dense and heat-resistant rather than soft like a typical plastic. It's genuinely old technology: melamine tableware first became popular in the 1950s and 60s as a fashionable, unbreakable alternative to ceramic. Domestic melamine fell out of favour for a while when early formulations scratched and stained easily, but the commercial-grade material used in catering and retail display today is a different tier entirely — dense, impact-resistant and built to survive repeated commercial dishwashing rather than the occasional home wash. The one genuine limitation worth knowing: melamine isn't microwave-safe, so it's a serving and display material, not a heating one.
Why melamine beats ceramic and glass on a retail counter
Three practical reasons melamine dominates commercial deli and retail food display: it doesn't chip or shatter the way ceramic and glass do under daily handling, it's significantly lighter for staff lifting and washing trays repeatedly through a shift, and it holds a printed or moulded finish — a stone or granite effect, for instance — far more consistently than a glaze on ceramic, which varies piece to piece.
Choosing a finish from the Rock collection
Black — the versatile default
The Polaris Platter in Black is the safest, most versatile choice for a mixed deli counter — it reads as neutral background to almost any food colour, and doesn't compete visually with bright packaging or vivid product.
Grey granite — a premium stone-effect alternative
The Grey Granite finish gives a genuine stone-effect texture at a fraction of real stone's weight and cost, and tends to read as more premium than plain black for cheese, charcuterie or antipasti-style presentation — categories where the platter itself is part of the visual appeal.
Beige — a warmer, softer alternative to black
The Beige finish suits counters aiming for a warmer, more natural presentation than stark black — bakery, deli bread and pastry displays in particular tend to photograph and present better against a lighter, warmer platter tone.
Sizing platters to the counter
Rock collection platters, like most commercial deli serveware, follow Gastronorm (GN) sizing — a GN 1/1 platter at 530×325mm covers a full standard counter well, while a GN 1/2 at 265×325mm covers half that footprint, letting two smaller platters or one platter and a riser share the same well a single GN 1/1 would occupy.
Frequently asked questions
Is melamine tableware safe and durable for commercial use?
Yes — commercial-grade melamine resin is dense, impact-resistant and built to withstand repeated commercial dishwashing. It is not microwave-safe, so it should be used for serving and display rather than heating.
Why is melamine used instead of ceramic on retail counters?
Melamine doesn't chip or shatter like ceramic under daily handling, is significantly lighter for repeated lifting and washing, and holds a printed or moulded finish more consistently than a ceramic glaze.
What's the difference between the Rock collection colours?
Black is the most versatile, neutral option for mixed displays. Grey granite gives a premium stone-effect look suited to cheese and charcuterie presentation. Beige offers a warmer tone that suits bakery and pastry displays.
