Christmas Retail Displays 2026: How to Get Your Shop Floor Ready Before the Rush
Share
Christmas in Irish retail is won in October. By the time the first Late Late Toy Show ad airs, the shops that do well have already planned their floor, ordered their fixtures and decided what goes at the till. Last December, Irish shoppers spent almost €1.5 billion on groceries in four weeks, according to Kantar – a record. Here is how to make sure your shop floor is ready to take its share, from the window to the counter.
Key takeaways
- Plan the floor in October, install in early November, and keep one change in reserve for the final fortnight.
- Build a gifting zone near the door: price-banded, easy to browse, easy to pick up.
- The till point is your best stocking-filler fixture – keep it tight and seasonal.
- Wooden tree displays and gift boxes add atmosphere and sell product at the same time.
- Plan around the key dates: Halloween, Black Friday, 8 December and the final weekend before Christmas.
Christmas retail displays: start with the calendar
Irish Christmas trading comes in waves, and your floor should change with them.
- Late October – Halloween (Saturday 31 October). Keep Halloween tight and near the till; have the Christmas fixtures built and waiting.
- Early November – the switch. Christmas goes up the day after Halloween in most shops. Lead with gifting and decorations, not discounts.
- Black Friday (27 November) and Cyber Monday (30 November). If you run offers, give them one clearly signed zone rather than dotting them everywhere.
- 8 December. The traditional day out for Christmas shopping in many Irish towns – a good moment for a fresh window.
- The final fortnight. Stocking fillers, last-minute gifts and party food. Last year, Tuesday 23 December alone saw more than €107 million in grocery sales.
The window: one strong idea
A Christmas window does not need to be big. It needs one idea, lit well, with a product the customer can find inside. A wooden display tree dressed with your actual stock – not just baubles – turns the window into a shelf.
Wooden trees that hold stock
ESPOSIT, the Italian manufacturer we represent in Ireland and the UK, makes a family of Christmas-tree-shaped displays that slot together without tools. They work in a window, on a counter or as a centrepiece on the floor, and they carry small gifts, decorations and light products rather than just looking festive.

Build a gifting zone near the door
December shoppers come in with a list and a budget, and very little time. Make it easy:
- Band by price, not by category. "Under €10", "Under €25", "Something special". It is how people actually shop for gifts.
- Use tables and low units. Shoppers browse gifts with their hands. Keep the zone at waist height so it can be seen from the door.
- Build it high at the back. A taller unit behind the tables gives the zone a backdrop and carries more stock.
- Restock daily. A half-empty gift table looks like leftovers by the second week of December.
Gift boxes that double as display
One of the smartest ideas from the ESPOSIT workshop: wooden gift boxes that sit on the counter as a display, then go home with the customer as the packaging. For delis, off-licences and gift shops selling hampers, the box becomes part of the product – and it can carry your logo.
The till point: the stocking-filler shelf
In December, every customer queues. Use it. Keep the counter to two or three lines – chocolate, small gifts, cards, batteries – on one countertop unit, and change it in the final week to last-minute lines. A rotating countertop display holds a lot of small stock on a small footprint.

Champagne, chocolate and the big sellers
Kantar's figures for last Christmas show where the money went: an extra €6.6 million on seasonal chocolates and biscuits, and sparkling wine sales up nearly 22%. If you sell either, give them a proper home. In a mixed shop with an off-licence, remember that festive drinks still have to sit inside your compliant alcohol area – see our guide to alcohol display rules in Ireland.
Keep it safe and keep it moving
- Leave aisles wide enough for buggies and wheelchairs, even at peak.
- Do not block fire exits or extinguishers with seasonal stock.
- Price every gift clearly – impulse dies at "how much is that?".
- Plan the January changeover now, so the Christmas fixtures can be stripped back and reused.
FAQ
When should Christmas displays go up in Ireland?
Most shops switch the day after Halloween. Plan and order fixtures in October so you are not waiting on deliveries in November.
Can we reuse our Christmas displays every year?
Yes, if they are built to last. Wooden tree displays and gift units can be stored flat and dressed differently each year.
Can you brand Christmas displays or gift boxes with our logo?
Yes. Most of our wooden displays and gift boxes can be engraved or printed. Talk to us early – November is busy.
