FSDU vs CDU: Which Retail Display Does Your Campaign Need?

FSDU vs CDU: Which Retail Display Does Your Campaign Need?

Floor or counter. It sounds like a small logistics question, but it's really a question about where your shopper actually decides — and most brands answer it by budget instead of by behaviour, which is how good products end up in the wrong place with the right intentions.

Here's the decision, made properly, in about six minutes.

The short answer

Choose an FSDU (free-standing display unit) when the job is floor presence: launches, volume products, campaigns that need to be seen from halfway down the aisle. Choose a CDU (counter display unit) when the job is the till point: impulse products, small formats, the add-on purchase made while the card machine is already out.

And know this from the start: the strongest campaigns run both. The FSDU builds awareness on the floor; the CDU converts at the counter. Two placements, one shopper journey, one matching family of fixtures.

What each format actually does

The FSDU: your argument in the aisle

An FSDU is a stake in the ground — multi-shelf capacity, aisle-level visibility, your branding at full height in someone else's shop. It works on the shopper who hasn't decided yet: the one walking past with a half-formed list who can still be interrupted.

It's the format we built for L'OR Coffee — a premium free-standing unit for a brand whose product justifies the floor space it takes — and for Áine Chocolates, whose bespoke FSDU gives handmade chocolate the setting it deserves rather than a printed box to sit in.

The CDU: your closer at the till

A CDU fights a different battle. The shopper at the counter has finished shopping; their guard is down and their wallet is out. A counter unit converts that moment — which is why counter space is the most fought-over few centimetres in retail, and why a flimsy unit gets cleared off it fast.

It's the territory of our counter work for Savoursmiths in the UK, the crate display we built for Keogh's Crisps, and the slot-in unit for Perfirm Nutrition — formats that hold their spot on a busy counter because the shopkeeper actually likes having them there. That last point is underrated: a beautiful wooden CDU survives counter politics; a tatty cardboard one gets binned by the staff before the campaign even ends.

Choose an FSDU when…

  • Your product needs volume on display — multiple shelves, multiple facings, stock depth.
  • You're launching, and being discovered matters more than being convenient.
  • You want a permanent branded presence — a fixture the store keeps year-round and you re-merchandise season after season.
  • The retailer has floor space to give — and you'd rather own a square metre of it than rent a shelf slot.
  • The product is too big, too heavy or too premium for a counter. Real weight is exactly what solid timber is for — and precisely where cardboard buckles.

Choose a CDU when…

  • The product is small, giftable or impulse-priced — bought on feeling, not on the list.
  • Counter space is available, and you can win the argument for it with a unit worth looking at.
  • You want maximum conversion per square centimetre — nothing in retail outperforms the till point for it.
  • Budget is tighter: CDUs cost less than floor units, and a permanent wooden CDU still outlasts every cardboard fixture in the shop.
  • You're selling into cafés, delis, farm shops or pharmacies, where the counter is the shop floor — see our shop & café counter displays.

How to win the placement conversation with the retailer

Here's the part the format guides never mention: you don't fully control the answer. The retailer grants floor and counter space, and they grant it to displays that earn their keep — which changes the material calculation entirely.

Put yourself behind the store manager's eyes. Floor space is stock-holding space; a display that sags, scuffs or looks tired by week three is a liability they'll quietly relegate to the back corner or bin outright, campaign timeline or not. Counter space is even harsher — it's the most contested territory in the shop, staff have opinions, and a cardboard unit that looks like clutter is clutter.

A solid wooden fixture flips the conversation. It arrives looking like something the store would have chosen for itself; it holds weight, wipes clean and survives the daily knocks of real retail. Store managers keep it, staff restock it without resentment, and more than once we've heard of retailers asking the brand whether the unit can stay after the campaign ended.

That's the placement argument nobody prices into the quote: the best display is the one the retailer wants on their floor.

The false economy to avoid in either format

Whichever placement you choose, you'll be offered the cardboard version at a price that looks unbeatable. It's unbeatable because you'll pay it again next campaign, and the one after — the disposable-POS industry doesn't sell displays, it sells repeat orders with a print job on top. "Recyclable" on the spec sheet doesn't change the treadmill; it just tells you which bin the money goes in.

A wooden unit — solid timber and FSC-certified plywood, 100% wood, zero plastic — is bought once, branded permanently (laser engraving, UV print or stains, Pantone/RAL matched), and re-merchandised for years. Premium at the point of sale, absent from your waste ledger. Read why wooden displays and wood vs cardboard.

Run both: the matching family

The shopper who noticed your FSDU in the aisle and meets your CDU at the till has now seen your brand twice in one visit, in matching timber, without a single ad impression being bought. Designed as a family — same materials, same finish, same engraved branding — the pair costs less to develop than two separate projects and works harder than either alone.

We design and quote them together as standard. One mock-up review, one production run, one delivery.

FAQs

Can I get matching FSDUs and CDUs? Yes — designed as a family from the same brief, branded identically, quoted together. It's the configuration we recommend for launches: awareness on the floor, conversion at the counter, one consistent brand presence in between.

Solid or slot-together? Both formats come both ways. Bespoke solid builds are made to order in our Dublin workshop for flagship placements; flat-pack slot-together units ship flat, assemble in minutes without tools, and make multi-store rollouts affordable to freight. Many campaigns mix the two — solid for flagships, flat-pack for the estate.

Which is cheaper? A CDU, on the invoice — it's a smaller build. But run the real comparison: either wooden format, bought once and used for years, against the equivalent cardboard unit repurchased campaign after campaign. The lifetime numbers land firmly on the side of wood; see what an FSDU costs.

Who do you supply? Brands, retailers and agencies across Ireland and the UK — where we're the exclusive ESPOSIT distributor — with shipping across Europe and the US. All manufacturing happens in our own Dublin workshop, with a digital mock-up approved before production and typical lead times of a few weeks from sign-off and payment — the build is scheduled once payment is received.
