What Is an FSDU? The Complete Guide to Free-Standing Display Units
Share
Walk any supermarket aisle in Ireland and you're walking past a skip in waiting. Most of the free-standing displays around you — the printed towers of crisps, coffee and skincare — will be flattened and binned before the season changes.
That's not an accident. It's the business model. So before we define the acronym, let's be honest about the industry behind it.
What does FSDU stand for?
FSDU stands for Free-Standing Display Unit — a self-supporting retail display that stands on the shop floor, away from the shelving, to merchandise and promote a product on its own terms. It's the workhorse of product launches, seasonal campaigns and permanent brand presence in supermarkets, pharmacies, garden centres, off-licences, farm shops and speciality retail.
An FSDU is the closest thing a brand gets to owning its own square metre of someone else's shop. Which is exactly why it matters what it's built from — because that square metre is your brand, standing in public, all day, every day.
What is an FSDU used for?
Shelf space is a negotiation. Floor space is a statement. An FSDU puts your product at eye level in the store's highest-traffic zones — aisle ends, entrances, till approaches — where the purchase decision actually happens.
Brands use FSDUs to do three jobs:
- Launch: a new product needs to be seen from the aisle, not hunted for on a shelf between two incumbents.
- Own a moment: Christmas, summer, back-to-school — a seasonal campaign lives or dies on visibility.
- Hold ground permanently: a branded fixture that stays in store year-round, re-merchandised season after season, quietly compounding brand presence while competitors reprint and rebuild.
The first two jobs, the cardboard industry will happily sell you — again and again and again. The third one it can't do at all. That's the job we build for.
What are FSDUs made from? (The part nobody says out loud)
Most FSDUs are corrugated cardboard. Cheap to print, quick to ship, and engineered — whether anyone admits it or not — to fail. It sags under weight, scuffs in transit, wilts near a chiller cabinet, and goes in the bin the moment the campaign ends.
Then the next campaign starts, and you buy it all again.
You'll hear that this is fine because the cardboard is recyclable. It's a fig leaf. A display that's designed, printed, shipped and discarded every single campaign is a waste treadmill regardless of what bin it dies in. Recyclability is what the industry says instead of durability.
Wooden FSDUs are the honest alternative. Built from solid timber and FSC-certified plywood, they hold real weight, survive real shop floors, look better in year three than cardboard looks in week three — and they never appear in your waste figures, because they never become waste. Read the full comparison: wood display vs cardboard display.
And no, the answer isn't plastic either. Plastic fixtures last longer than cardboard, but they're fossil-derived, rarely recycled in practice, and increasingly the first thing a retailer's sustainability team wants off the floor. Our displays are 100% wood, zero plastic — see sustainable, plastic-free displays.
Solid bespoke or slot-together flat-pack?
Wooden FSDUs come in two builds, and the right choice depends on the job.
Solid, bespoke units
Made to order in our Dublin workshop: fully custom dimensions, shelving, finish and branding. This is the route for flagship placements and premium brands — the kind of fixture we built for L'OR Coffee, whose free-standing unit needed to look as considered as the coffee it holds, and for Áine Chocolates, whose bespoke FSDU presents handmade chocolate the way a jeweller presents rings. If your product is premium, a cardboard tower actively works against you.
Slot-together flat-pack units
These ship flat, assemble in minutes without tools or fittings, and cost less to freight — which matters enormously on a multi-store rollout. They're still solid wood, still permanent, still brandable. As the exclusive ESPOSIT distributor for Ireland and the UK, we carry a full range of these alongside our bespoke work — browse the ESPOSIT floor displays.
Plenty of rollouts mix both: solid units for flagship stores, flat-pack for the wider estate. Same brand, same finish, one supplier.
Can FSDUs be branded?
Properly branded — not just wrapped in a print job that delaminates by February.
- Laser engraving: your logo cut into the timber itself. It reads premium, it can't peel, and it lasts the life of the unit.
- UV print: full-colour artwork direct to the wood for campaigns that need vibrancy.
- Stains and finishes: colour-matched to your palette with Pantone and RAL references.
Every project gets a digital mock-up before production — your artwork, your colours, your product on its shelves. Nothing is built until you've signed it off. The mock-up is the contract.
How much does an FSDU cost?
Here's the question the disposable-POS industry hopes you never ask: what does it cost per year of service, not per invoice?
Cardboard looks cheap on the first purchase order. But it's reprinted, re-shipped and re-binned campaign after campaign — buy a display four times a year and you haven't bought a display, you've subscribed to one. A wooden FSDU is bought once and works for years. Amortised over its real lifetime, permanent wood is frequently the lower total cost — and always the lower waste.
We quote per project, because an honest price depends on size, finish, branding and quantity — not on a rate card designed to make disposable look competitive. We've written a full breakdown here: how much does an FSDU cost in Ireland & the UK?
Who makes wooden FSDUs?
We do. Custom Wood Designs (CWD Displays) manufactures bespoke wooden displays in Dublin — designed, cut, built and branded under one roof, not subcontracted through three time zones. We're the exclusive ESPOSIT distributor for Ireland and the UK, and we ship across Ireland, the UK, Europe and the US. Typical lead time is a few weeks from approved mock-up and payment — production is scheduled once payment is received; tell us your install date and we plan backwards from it.
Our work stands in stores for brands like Dole, Fyffes, Keogh's Crisps, Nobó Chocolates and Savoursmiths — names that could buy cardboard by the pallet and chose not to.
FSDU FAQs
What is the difference between an FSDU and a CDU? An FSDU stands on the floor and carries volume — multiple shelves, seen from the aisle. A CDU (Counter Display Unit) sits on the counter or till point and converts impulse purchases at the moment of payment. Many campaigns run both as a matching family: the FSDU builds awareness on the floor, the CDU closes the sale at the till. Compare them properly in FSDU vs CDU, or browse wooden counter displays.
Are FSDUs permanent or temporary? Cardboard FSDUs are temporary by design — they exist to be replaced, which is precisely why the industry loves them. Wooden FSDUs are permanent: built to stand for years, re-merchandised for every season and campaign, and refinished rather than replaced if your branding evolves.
How long does a wooden FSDU take to make? Typically a few weeks from the approved mock-up and payment — the build is scheduled on receipt of payment. Bespoke solid builds and flat-pack rollouts are planned backwards from your installation date, not forwards from our convenience.
Who supplies wooden FSDUs in Ireland and the UK? Custom Wood Designs (CWD Displays) manufactures bespoke solid FSDUs in Dublin and is the exclusive ESPOSIT distributor for Ireland and the UK, shipping across Europe and the US. One workshop, both ranges, no middlemen.
