Pharmacy Display Ideas: Fitting Out an Irish Pharmacy That Sells – and Stays Compliant

The Irish pharmacy is two shops under one roof. At the back, a clinical service run by a pharmacist. At the front, a retail floor competing with supermarkets, beauty halls and online sellers for skincare, vitamins and baby care. The best pharmacies make the front feel like a destination and the back feel trusted – and the displays do much of that work. Here is how to lay out a pharmacy that sells, and the medicines rules that shape where products can go.

Key takeaways

  • Zone the floor: beauty and skincare at the front, seasonal health in the middle, the counter and dispensary at the back.
  • Use clean, light fixtures – timber and white read as trusted and premium.
  • Non-prescription codeine products must not be available for self-selection in Irish pharmacies.
  • Paracetamol pack sizes are capped by law, and it cannot be sold from vending machines or self-service devices.
  • Change the seasonal bay at least four times a year: cold and flu, hay fever, sun care, back to school.

Pharmacy display ideas: zone it front to back

A pharmacy customer usually arrives with one job – a prescription, a cold remedy, a baby product. The layout should let them do that job quickly, then show them something worth stopping for on the way.

  1. Front of shop – beauty, skincare and fragrance. The browsing zone and often the best margin. Good light, open shelving, testers at hand height.
  2. Middle – seasonal health and wellness. Cold and flu, hay fever, sun care, vitamins, sports nutrition. One feature bay that changes with the season.
  3. Baby and mother. Give it a calm, clearly signed bay. Parents with a buggy need room to turn.
  4. Back – counter and dispensary. Pharmacy-only products, advice, and the consultation room. Keep sight lines open so staff can see the floor.

The medicines rules that shape your layout

Most of a pharmacy's front-of-shop range is ordinary retail. Some medicines are not, and the law decides where they can sit.

Codeine: not for self-selection

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) is clear that non-prescription medicines containing codeine should not be accessible to the public for self-selection. They should be supplied only where the pharmacist judges it necessary – usually after a simpler painkiller such as paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen has not worked – and for no more than three days without medical advice. In practice that means behind the counter, out of reach, with the pharmacist involved in every sale.

Paracetamol: capped pack sizes

The Medicinal Products (Control of Paracetamol) Regulations 2001 limit how much paracetamol can be sold at once. In a pharmacy, a pack of standard-strength tablets can hold up to 24, and the sale must be made by, or under the personal supervision of, an authorised person. In other shops, the limit is 12 and only one pack per transaction. Paracetamol cannot be sold from a vending machine or any self-service device.

For a convenience store or forecourt, that last point matters too: keep paracetamol where staff control the sale, not on a self-service fixture near the door.

Fixtures that build trust

Pharmacy shoppers judge the clinic by the shop. Clutter, cardboard and mismatched metal say "discount". Light timber, white and good lighting say "care".

  • Adjustable shelving. Pack sizes vary wildly – from sachets to family-size vitamins. Shelves that move save you redesigning the bay every season.
  • Counter units for impulse lines. Lip balm, hand cream, travel sizes, plasters. Small, high-turn, easy to pick up while the prescription is filled.
  • A feature floor unit. One free-standing display at the front for the seasonal hero – sun care in May, immunity in October.
  • Brand-funded units. Skincare and wellness brands often co-fund branded fixtures. Make sure they fit your look, not just theirs.

The seasonal bay: four changes a year

Season Hero category Display tip
October – February Cold, flu and immunity Keep pharmacy-only lines behind the counter; feature the general-sale range in front
March – June Hay fever and allergy Pair with eye care and tissues on one unit
May – August Sun care and travel Travel sizes at the counter, full range on a floor unit
August – September Back to school Nit treatments, lunchbox snacks, vitamins and plasters together

Privacy and the consultation room

Pharmacies now offer vaccinations, health checks and more advice than ever. Place tall units so the consultation room door is not on display to the whole queue, and keep the counter area clear enough for a quiet conversation.

FAQ

Can paracetamol go on an open shelf in a pharmacy?

Pack sizes are capped by law and the sale must be made by, or under the personal supervision of, an authorised person, so many pharmacies keep it at or behind the counter. Check the Regulations and PSI guidance for your own set-up.

Where should codeine products be kept?

Not where customers can help themselves. PSI guidance says non-prescription codeine products should not be accessible for self-selection, and the pharmacist should be involved in each supply.

What displays work best for pharmacy skincare?

Open, well-lit shelving at the front of the shop, with testers at hand height and one feature unit for the current hero brand.

Can you build pharmacy displays to our measurements?

Yes. We build bespoke solid-timber units in Dublin and supply the ESPOSIT range. Send us your floor plan.
